The article “Nurse Practitioner Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs When Caring for Transgender People” outlines results from a study of the knowledge and attitudes that are imperative for nurse practitioners when working with transgender people. Results from the article point towards an existing gap that increases discrimination against transgender people. NPs who participated in this study perceived existence of gaps in their knowledge that inhibit care for transgender people. As such, all NPs must work on improving gaps by doing more research, making adjustments in education, and changing the nursing practice (Paradiso & Lally, 2018). Current medical provider education has a lacuna in transgender healthcare. The deficiencies in curriculum leave NPs uninformed on the standards for transgender healthcare. In essence, most NPs have both personal and professional intermission, fear due to uncertainty of chosen intervention, intervention with purpose, and pride. As such, the article insists on the importance of developing a practice that informs NPs on transgender health through changes in curriculum and research.
The article “Delivering Culturally Sensitive Care to LGBTQI Patients” looks into the importance of better communication during care delivery to transgender people. The study indicates that most healthcare providers are unable to effectively communicate with LGBTQI patients due to preconceived thoughts on sexual identity and behavior. Therefore, the health care providers choose to avoid certain aspects of care due to discomfort, thus placing the patients in danger. Delivering culturally sensitive care to such patients calls for a better understanding of their health-related disparities. LGBTQI patents have been misjudged, abused, or marginalized. Therefore, NPS should provide inclusive quality care. NPs should understand how interactions with diverse patients affect the intervention process. Communication should be realistic while considering past LGBTQIs’ exposure to marginalization and discrimination (Landry, 2017). Further, the communication should be essential, without stereotypes and using politically correct words. NPs must address patients and treat them the say such patients express themselves. NPs provide holistic care for LGBTQI patients by understanding their culture and being aware of effective communication methods.
Making a positive impact on care for LGBT patients
The provision of better care is based on the best understanding of diverse cultures. Therefore, I plan on improving care for LGBT patients by understanding and full awareness of their culture. I will improve my communication and interaction with LGBT patients to create a conducive environment characterized by a feeling of understanding, acceptance, and a lack of discrimination.
Important aspects of NPs
The NP must improve understanding of how LGBT identities can inhibit their access to inclusive quality care. Further, an NP must understand how past experiences of discrimination, abuse, or marginalization can affect care delivery. Understanding the LGBT patient leads to better and realistic communication. The NP can sieve out stereotypes to cultivate realistic expectations. In essence, it is imperative for health caregivers to improve awareness, thus improving their care delivery to LGBT patients.
Specific interventions in LGBT patient care
While offering care to an LGBT patient, I will create an accepting environment through proper communication. The accepting environment will be successfully created by improving my knowledge. I will openly communicate with the patient by using expressions and attitudes that LGBT patients use to describe themselves. Using such an intervention helps them feel accepted, thus creating a caring environment. Using the correct ally makes patients comfortable, thus removing the illusion of discrimination or abuse. Further, when an NP uses the correct expression/words, it shows inclusive care, respect, and concern.
