PICOT is a method that is used consistently in the creation of researchable and answerable questions. When the formula is written well, then it makes the process of evaluating and finding the health or related clinical question easier, faster, and direct (Rios, & Thabane, 2010). Before conducting any research, it is essential to come up with a good picot question as it will act as a guideline to the whole study.: Before any research is conducted, the first part is the identification of the question you want to evaluate (Rios, & Thabane, 2010). This is essential as it provides and enables you to have the knowledge and better understanding better to obtain more relevant results. Picot carries a lot of significance when it comes to summarizing a research question and in exploring therapy effects (Perry, Potter, & Ostendorf, 2013). In breakdown PICOT, P- refers to the population or the sample that is used or intended to be used in a study. I stand for intervention, which is the treatment that is to be administered to the subject that is in the study. C stands for comparison, which highlights the plans to be used in the reference group and compare it to the treatment intervention. O- stands for the outcome, which means what will be measured and justify the effectiveness of the intervention. T- stands for the time, which is the duration in which data will be collected (Perry, Potter, & Ostendorf, 2013).

Example of a PICOT question

PICOT Question: In patients aged 65 and above (Patient population), how does influenza vaccine use (Intervention) compared to lack of vaccine use influence the patient’s (Comparison) risk of developing pneumonia (Outcome) in the flu season (Time)?

Where:

Population: Patients aged 70 and above

Intervention: Vaccine use

Comparison: Patients that take vaccine versus patients that fail to take the influenza vaccine

Outcome: Risk of developing pneumonia

Time: Flue season.
