LAB 1 Mineral Composition
Purpose of Experiment: To use and calculate empirical and molecular formulas.

LAB 2 Gravimetric Analysis
To access your lab, please follow these instructions– *if you have already done steps 1-10, simply log in to view your course and participate in lab activities:
1. Please go to:
https://oli.cmu.edu/jcourse/webui/register/student.do
2. This will bring you to the “Course Key Students” page.
3. Enter the Course Key “GRC19” in the box and click “register.”
4. Create an account by filling in the information (be sure to use an account ID and password you will remember and make a note of it for future logins).
5. Click “I’m not a robot” and “Sign Up.”
6. Confirm your account by clicking on “confirm account.”
7. Read the consent form, then agree by choosing “I agree” and “submit.”
8. Click on “Register” for the Chemistry Virtual Lab Activities with Instructor Sandra Raysor.
9. Click on “Enter course” next to the red arrow to begin the lab.
10. Find the lab required for the assignment and begin work

Instructions: Write out a linear equation to answer each question.
1. How many molecules of oxygen are found in 3.00 moles of oxygen?

3. How many atoms are found in 4.20 g of magnesium (Mg)?
4. How many atoms are found in 3.45 g of CO2?
Instructions: Calculate the mass percent composition of a compound. Show all of your work.
5. Calculate the mass percent of 0.485 g of H, which reacts with oxygen to form 2.32 g H2O.
6. Calculate the mass percent of manganese (Mn) in potassium permanganate (KMnO4).
Instructions: Calculate the empirical or molecular formula for compounds. Show all of your work.
7. A 2.87 g sample of carbon reacts with hydrogen to form 3.41 g of car fuel. What is the empirical formula of the car fuel?
8. Glucose is a carbohydrate that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The empirical formula of glucose is CH2O and its molar mass is 180.12 g/mol. Find the molecular formula of glucose.
