Officer Williams asked the neighborhood’s regular trash collector to put the content of the defendant’s garbage that was left on the curb in plastic bags and to turn over the bags to him at the end of the day. The trash collector did as the officer asked in order to not mix the garbage once he collected the defendant’s garbage. Then, Officer Williams’ partner, Officer Martinez, searched through the garbage and found items indicative of narcotics use. Officer Williams and Officer Martinez then recited the information that was obtained from the trash in an affidavit in support of a warrant to search the defendant’s home. Officer Martinez and Officer Williams encountered the defendant at the house later that day upon execution of the warrant. The officers found quantities of cocaine and heroin during the search and arrested the defendant on felony narcotics charges.

The Supreme Court handed down a landmark opinion in Carpenter v. United States, ruling that the Fourth Amendment protects cell phone location information. In an opinion of Chief Justice Roberts, the Court also recognized that location information, collected by cell providers like Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon, creates a “detailed chronicle of a person’s physical presence compiled every day, every moment over years.” As a result, police must now get a warrant before obtaining this data. Cell phones are essential to modern life, but the way that cell phones operate by constantly connecting to cell towers to exchange data this also makes it possible for cell providers to collect information on everywhere that each phone is located phone’s owner has been for years in the past. As the Court noted, not only does access to this kind of information allow the government to achieve near perfect surveillance, as if it had attached an ankle monitor to the phone’s user, however, because phone companies collect it for every device, the police need not even know in advance whether they want to follow a particular individual, or when.  In some cases I feel that yes they need to track your cellphone if they are looking to track a fugitive and trying to locate misisng children that is a must

TOPIC CHOICE TWO: Government Economic Policies – Hits and Misses

One of the criticisms of the Hebrew Bible is the violence of God. Scriptures from other religions (Hinduism: The Bhagavad Gita is set entirely in war; the Qur’an talks of war; Christianity is based on a final battle and destruction of the world) depict their gods as violent as well. However, throughout the Hebrew Bible God is also depicted as a God of love.

 

Main discussion questions for the week:

Given the Covenants between the Israelites and God, the 10 Commandments, the beauty of the Psalms, and the predictions of the prophets, provide three (3) of your own observations about this violent/loving God. 

 

Judaism is a religion of doing and faith is seen in actions towards others.

Given the Covenants between the Israelites and God, the 10 Commandments, the beauty of the Psalms, and the predictions of the prophets, provide three (3) of your own observations about this violent/loving God. 

Three observations that displayed a violent/loving God would be when Moses was trying to free the Israelites from the Pharaohs bondage and displayed the signs of plagues of lotus’s, flies and frogs and not to mention the killing of the first-born child.  Another observation would be when Moses was being pursued by the Pharaohs army and God led Moses to divide the sea in order to allow the Israelites to pass but crush the Egyptians when they followed.  Lastly, another observation would be after Moses was given the 10 commandments and the Israelites headed to the land of Canaan but could not enter the land and God took care of them by scattering bread on the ground which was later named Manna.

Compare and contrast the 10 Commandments with the 8-Fold Path of Buddhism, the Confucian Virtues, and the 12 Vows of Jainism.

The one thing that I think all of these have in common is that they lay out the foundation for a way of living a life that worships God and to be the best possible person that you can be. They try to instill a sense of self-worth, dignity and respect for others while respecting yourself. The difference would be that the 10 commandments relates to more specific religious guidelines such as “you shall have no other God’s before me”.

Are we seeing the same concept of doing and faith today, or has there been a shift as we move to Western religions?

Unfortunately, I think that there has been a shift away from these beliefs or at least it’s more known today. You see and hear things that contradict the beliefs of the 10 commandments and not to mention people do not have the same virtues or beliefs that would come from any of these religious beliefs.

By the late 1930s, the US was still dealing with the Great Depression, and conflict was intensifying between powers in Europe and between Japan and its neighbors in Asia. At first, isolationist sentiments prevailed, but eventually the US entered the conflict. Besides developments of the overseas conflict, the next few years of a “war economy” had an enormous impact on the nature of work and the workforce that left a lasting legacy.

Choose and discuss one of the following two topics related to the American experiences in World War II:

1. Focusing on American opinions and events of the late 1930s and early 1940s, discuss isolationist views and why those changed.
