Introduction

Microwave heating, as soon as this word is heard, the daily appliance of the microwave oven comes to one’s mind. Similar to that, there are many devices that use the same concept to suit their functionality. Microwave are made up of different kinds of transmitters and also have very high frequency radio wave. Microwaves are generated by various types of transmitters and microwaves are the most common type of electromagnetic waveforms that is being emitted continuously, especially in this modern era where technology is flourishing and within 5 meters of everyone, a microwave is being generated. This does not mean that we are all begin cooked by the microwaves like our food in the microwave oven as, there are power levels to the microwaves being generated; however, it does not mean that microwaves have no dangerous effects on our health [1]. Basically, the microwave radiation is attached with some electromagnetic radiation microwave frequency in between 300 MHZ – 300 GHZ. The next sections will go more in depth into the process of microwave heating and how it can be controlled.

Mechanism of the Process

Looking at the microwave oven, like the first name suggests, it uses microwaves to heat stuff that is placed in it. Microwaves are basically one of the many types of electromagnetic transverse waves with a wavelength of a couple of centimeters and frequency of between 108 Hz to 1012 Hertz as seen in Figure 1 below [2].

Figure 1. Chart about electromagnetic waves, Adapted from [2]

Electromagnetic waves are form of energy transfer due to change in the magnetic or electric field coupling together without any medium to travel through, meaning that this transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves can travel through vacuum of space [3]. With that being said, in the microwave oven, the microwaves being emitted by the transmitter in it, causes the water and fat molecules in the food to vibrate due to the transfer of energy, heating the food up. Figure 2 below shows the electric field and temperature plot of a potato being heated in microwave oven.

Figure 2. Potato in a microwave, Adapted from [4]

This summarizes that the cause of microwave heating is the energy transfer from the transmitter to the particles in the matter which causes the particles to vibrate faster and faster, heating the matter up.

In this process, there is the transmitting side and receiving side. In the transmitting side, for the control of heat transfer in the process, we can change the amplitude of the transmitter, varying the energy transfer per second to the particles of the matter, the higher the amplitude, the faster the matter will heat up. As for the receiving end, to control the heat transfer to it, it can have shiny surfaces to reflect the electromagnetic wave transfer or the matter can have different material properties that will cause it to heat up at different rates [4].

Significance of Heat Transfer in the Process

Microwaves are used in a house hold purpose for making foods as well as different medical treatments to makes the daily life easier and faster.
