Reflection
Chapter 11 is about Natural Resources Law. Some hot topics in natural resources laws are discussed. Different laws address issues on natural resources in environmental law. What comes to mind when we use the term natural resources? Natural resources include land, fish, wildlife, air, biota, water (oceans, rivers, lakes, ground water etc.). The sources of energy are also addressed under natural resources law. Examples of natural resources discussed in this chapter are public lands and wilderness areas; fish, birds, and wildlife; and energy sources.
Public land management is achieved through the division of lands into four types: general public lands, national forests, national wildlife refuges, and national parks. Each type of land is managed by a special agency. Some factors that affect land management are economic uses and uses aimed at the protection of wildlife and wilderness areas. Acts which protect natural resources include the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
Different sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, biomass) as well as global warming are also discussed. Global warming is a phenomenon linked to the use of traditional energy sources. The alternative sources of energy discussed are a means to help address global warming and other environment related issues.
The other required resources for this week are: the assigned chapter (10) from Hitchcock & Blair (2010) which discusses the future of the relationships between environment and business; and the article about the Ohio packaging maker from the Forbes website.
Please read the assigned chapters and the article and note the role of businesses and governments in addressing global environmental issues. Also, analyze the effectiveness of current international environmental law.
