Discussion 1
The text, “Healthcare Strategic Planning,” by John Harris describes strategic planning as, “a plan for getting from a point in the present to some point in the future in the face of uncertainty and resistance” (2018). These plans provides details on the organizations goals, what is working for the facility and what is not working in their favor (2018). Currently working as a patient financial representative (PFR) for Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF) each department and the entire organization formulates strategic plans as a layout of opportunity for future growth. Planning without a doubt is necessary when it comes to operating a successful business (organization). By analyzing the past and present, facilities can determine what is working what is not working and brainstorm ways on how to address any issues and improve productivity.
Not only within my department of ED registration, but the organization as a whole conducts strategic planning periods where executives and other leaders construct a plan to achieve the objects, goals, and vision of BHSF. With the healthcare industry constantly evolving, through policy implementations, trainings, technology etc. there are adjustments made to the work flow that employees are expected accomplish to stay in compliance. For example, in registration when we are checking in patients we must utilize the biometric camera. This camera captures the iris of each patient and attaches their photo to their account. The implementation of technologies in the work place are to increase productivity and efficient within the organization. Originally, the introduction of the biometric was something that was planned and is now operational and utilized on a daily basis. As of now a new piece of technology will be implemented in the emergency department (and possibly others as well) is the use of iPads (or tablets) for registration. This change will bring a much quicker registration process overall and as a PFR this means we possibly would no longer have to push the WOWs (workstation on wheels).
Some of the main goals in the ED registration department is productivity, accuracy, and collections. Without setting the goal and developing a proper plan to implement changes to achieve these objectives, it is highly likely that these technologies would have never been introduced and in turn have a negative impact towards the organization. “Setting goals prior to strategic planning will help ensure these plans will positively impact the organization,” (“Strategic Planning,” n.d.). The Strategic Planning Approach concise of four things: environmental assessment, organizational direction, strategy formulation, and transition to implementation (2018). I personally do not have a direct role in the strategic planning process I would say due to my job title and level. However, I have always been vocal with my thoughts and opinions, which I always speak to my direct supervisor. The planning is done by leaders in the organizations and they discuss the plans for each department, the hospital, and the organization as a whole. Afterwards there is a staff meeting with myself and other employees, where they have presentations and visuals of what is in the works for the hospital and organization for the quarter, year, etc.
