The goal of the referendum to ban smoking in public places including bars and restaurants is to reduce health issues linked to passive smoking. According to World health organization 900000 deaths have occurred in 2017 due to this second-hand smoking. Which is 1/8th of the death rate due to smoking. This is sad because people are suffering for others fault. These acts will make environment better for children to grow and blossom. It is everyone’s responsibility to work towards that. This is in the interest of public health and hence should be strongly supported.
Serious health issues include heart disease, lung cancer in adults. Brain cancer and lymphomas in children and many more are linked to the passive smoking. It is difficult to implement without awareness and educating the individuals in society. Campaigns should be conducted on priority to spread awareness in the society. This will remind individual’s responsibility to abide by this act.
Limitations include smoking in cars while accompanied with friends and family. Smoking zones at offices and public places like airports, bus stations etc. This has nobody’s control other than individual’s conscious about the side effects of passive smoking.
It is also crucial to understand the public interest on banning smoking in bars and restaurants. There a quite good number of bars that encourage smoking as people enjoy smoking at social gatherings and that could be the USP of such bars. So, allocating a specified areas for smoking could be feasible for both parties. Also penalties for smoking at public areas should be decided. It is a collaborative effort from both government and public to identify any such violations. Reporting such incidents is also very important and therefore should be reachable to common public.
