Topic 1: Gender locked?

How important are gender roles and expectations to your sense of who you are and how you live? This question is harder than it may appear because it is difficult to appreciate what a personal outlook and daily life is like for a gender you weren’t raised to identify with or it how gender has shaped your identity (it’s more than wearing different clothes or preferring certain hobbies, though those things are valid as well). For example, if you adopted a different gender, list three things that would change in your regular routines and relationships. Consider the list carefully, as you would have to deal with not only your own expectations or assumptions but the reactions and behaviors of others (which you cannot always control).

Topic 2: Enculturation and Personality

Around the world, families and cultures bring children up and tech them the values that are important in their cultures. One way that this is done is through cultural legends such as Thanksgiving or Johnny Appleseed in the USA. Another means of conveying cultural messages is through children’s books. Did you have a favorite children’s book or story? If so, explain what cultural themes or values were taught in your favorite book. Make sure that you pick a different book than others who have already posted to the discussion blog.
