Evidence-based clinical interventions can have an impact on patient outcomes, decrease healthcare costs (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018), and increase staff satisfaction. It is essential to engage with key stakeholders to share important information about EBP. PowerPoint presentations, emails, phone calls, and meeting in person are dissemination strategies that I would like to use. Through emails, phone calls, and meeting in person are ways the details on the evidence-based practice can be enhanced or discussed. When sending an email, it is essential to introduce self, explain the reason for the email, communicate the importance briefly with a direct point of information, and offer people contact should they have any questions (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, Gallagher-Ford, & Stillwell, 2011). A PowerPoint presentation can provide a brief and quick idea about the EBP. Of all the strategies, the phone calls are the least that I may use because I would prefer meeting in-person to present further information. I would prefer to meet with my supervisor or nursing educator about my ideas. Meeting in person is more persuasive to me as I can have face to face interactions. The two barriers that I might encounter are lack of support and lack of time. The lack of support from nursing leaders and the misperceptions that EBP takes too much time are barriers that prevent EBP from becoming the standard of care throughout the world (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, Giggleman, & Choy, 2017). At my workplace, the management and executive leadership decide on project implementations. Concerning my recommendation, it wouldn’t be likely to see support from management and nursing leaders.
Despite the barriers, I will continue to share my ideas and knowledge by incorporating them into my daily nursing practice. The EBP practice that I will be incorporating into my nursing care is the application of 10 interventions from the Safeward model. One of the evidence-based interventions from the Safeward model is “Positive Words” in which encouraging or saying something positive to patients constitutes supporting them (Baumgardt et al., 2019, p. 2). I will also incorporate and practice the other nine interventions, which include Clear Mutual Expectations, Soft Words, Talk Down, Bad News Mitigation, Know Each Other, Mutual Help Meeting, Calm Down Methods, Reassurance, and Discharge Messages (Baumgardt et al., 2019). Each intervention describes the therapeutic communication technique that mental health staff must provide during patient care. Learning one intervention at a time will help guide me in my evidence-based nursing practice. I hope that I can make a difference in my nursing care and improve patient outcomes.
