What has your most significant learning in the course been? Why? How will it help you in your career (personally or professionally)?
student response
he most significant thing that I learned in this course is that there are benefits called voluntary benefits. These types of benefits do not have to be offered by an employer. They can be in the form of a retirement plan, tuition assistance, tuition reimbursement, or prescription coverage. These are types of benefits that employers offer to attract employees to their company and or can be used to keep employees at their company (Martocchio, 2017). The reason why this topic was important to me was being in the military we have all many benefits offered to us such as free tuition assistance, free life insurance, and free medical coverages with no co-pays. Many of us in the military take these benefits for granted and do not realize or think about the cost or value of these benefits because we use them without thought because we have them.
The way that this knowledge is going to help me in my personal life is that I can use this new information to educate my young sailors just how lucky we are in the military with the pay and benefits that we have. Most of my young sailors want to get out of the military because they think that they will find a better or easier job in the civilian job sector. What they fail to realize is that the benefits that we in the military take for granted, civilians highly desire as part of their benefits packages.
The way that this information is going to help me professionally is when I retire, I will be able to better advise my future employers on what benefits they should offer their employees and why they should provide the benefits to the employees. I think that sometimes the management of companies gets wrapped up in making a profit or meeting a production goal that they forget that without their employees, the company will not go anywhere. It is important to take care of their employees and offer them competitive benefits to keep them motivated and productive so that the company can be successful
Respectfully,
Michael
