ASSIGNMENT #1: SHORT ESSAY (15%)
WHAT: A short essay of 500-600 words in response to
the topic below. You MUST choose one of the following
two films for your essay:
Nobody Waved Goodbye (Don Owen, 1964)

Your essay’s thesis statement MUST clearly respond to
this topic: HOW does your chosen film exemplify the
realist tradition in Canadian Cinema? To support your
thesis, your essay MUST analyze the film’s narrative,
characters, and filmmaking techniques.
WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 30th @ 12:00 PM (hard copy) &
Thursday, Jan. 30th @ 11:59 PM (e-copy)
WHERE: This assignment MUST be submitted TWO WAYS:
1. hard copy (printed off a computer) submitted in
person at the beginning of class
AND
2. identical electronic copy ( or x file)
uploaded onto Canvas by midnight
Students who fail to submit both of these two ways will
receive 0 for not following the submission policy.

CITATIONS: Sources should bolster your argument, not
make your argument for you. Quoting, paraphrasing, and
summarizing from sources must be properly cited in
text. You must also include time stamps for specific
shots/scenes from the film your essay discusses; please
see pages 4-5 of the MLA guidebook for how to do this.
All sources (including your chosen film) must be listed
alphabetically on a Works Cited page.
FORMAT: Your assignment MUST follow MLA 8 formatting
rules. A free MLA guidebook is available on Canvas un-
der the “Writing Resources” module. As per MLA style,
please provide your name (and nickname), course sec-
tion, and student number on the first page of your as-
signment.
