Question One
Scholarly research must be “aligned.” What does it mean that research is aligned? Use the GCU Library to locate an empirical study on the topic you are interested in researching. Give the APA-formatted citation for the article along with the Permalink. Is the study you selected aligned? Why or why not?
Question Two
From the bibliography for your prospectus, select five research studies that are most directly related to your own topic. Identify the research design for each of those studies. State which of the GCU Core Research Designs is used in each study. If the study uses a design not included in the GCU Core Research Designs, note that as well. To what extent do the research studies you identified influence the selection of the research design of your intended dissertation study? Why?

Maguire Associates, Inc (2014) notes the survey entailed collecting data from 50,000 employers; the study was conducted between July and September 2013. Among the survey questions were, which credentials are desired in the workplace and which skills should the new graduate’s possess in order to advance in their careers. Whereas the survey ran across different sectors including health care, media, retail and business, the business sector constituted the highest number of employers who responded to the survey question. In the business sector, employers averred that graduates in the business sector are well prepared to engage in the business career. In addition, the survey compared the perception of employers on the different ages of employees with similar qualifications. The findings showed that mature employees above 35 years are more serious with their job performance hence leading to faster promotions compared to youthful employees (Maguire Associates, Inc 2014). The findings indicate that well educated employees are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge that enable them fit into the job market and progress with their career faster than employees with lower level of education. Furthermore, middle-aged employees have higher chances of career progression due to commitment to their work compared to youthful employees. The study is important because it informs the relationship between age and career development and the relationship between education level and career development.

Organizations have to remain competitive by getting skilled workforce by upskilling or reskilling the available employees in order to cope with technological changes. The World Economic Forum (2016) notes that experience of employees in coping with the new technological changes helps them to maintain their jobs and helps their employers to remain competitive. The survey was done by gathering the views of business leaders on workforce changes in the contemporary business sector. A total of 325 business executives in America were interviewed, among the questions that were asked is the objectives and priorities that business organizations have established in terms of employee reskilling and training. The findings showed that organizations focus on training and reskilling their employees in technology related issues in order to integrate appropriately with technological changes. The study found that by 2022, there will be a decline in certain jobs because of takeover by technology. As such, the level or education and experience of employees is necessary in advancing in career. However, in a situation where experience and skills do not cope with technological change then, the individual may be redundant (World Economic Forum, 2016).
Clements, A. J. & Kamau, C. (2018). Understanding Students’ Motivation towards Proactive Career Behaviors through Goal-setting Theory and the Job Demands Resources Model. Studies in Higher Education, 43(12), pp. 2279-2293.
Employees in organizations are hopeful of advancing in their careers. However, various barriers such as lack of adequate academic qualifications or supportive environment hinder them. The authors focus on the motivational processes that influence students to engage in proactive career behaviors such as network building and skill development (Clements & Kamau, 2018). The study was conducted in the United Kingdom in 2018 in which 432 undergraduate students from UK- universities participated in cross sectional study. The findings showed that whereas students had higher educational qualification, the level of academic and employment workload did not have a negative effect on the proactive career behaviors (Clements & Kamau, 2018). That means what matters in successful career development is the implementation of proactive careers behaviors and not the level of education. However, the level of education supports the proactive career behaviors. It means that employees who have established challenging career goals are most likely to achieve them than those who have not because they use a mastery approach. The study was done because of the concerns that new graduates did not understand their employability particularly in the business and finance sectors; as such, they were not engaging early enough (Clements & Kamau, 2018). The situation meant that such employees accessed their first jobs late and progressed slowly towards their career goals due to lack of established career goals. The information in the article is important because it shades light on why individuals with similar academic qualifications progress differently in their career path.
Giragama, K. W. and Sooriyabandara, W. M. S. (2017). Factors Affecting the Career Development of Staff in the banking Sector: A Case Study of a private Bank of Sri Lanka. Proceeding of the 4th International Conference on Social Studies, 4, pp. 28-41.
The authors explain the influences of career development in the banking sector, which is one of the prestigious sectors that employees would like to associate with. The empirical study focused on determining factors that influence career development among employees in XYZ Plc. 159 employees from the bank were sampled and interviewed on reasons why employees in the lower grades are more, why there is lengthy stagnation in the same grade and why there is high staff turnover (Giragama & Sooriyabandara, 2017). The findings showed that factor that influenced career progression in the bank were career education, individual attitudes and empowerment among others. The findings of the study indicate that career development is influenced by education in addition to other personal attributes. As such, the information from the article is appropriate in explaining the association between business professional in corporate America and career success. Notably, whereas the study was carried out in a different country, the results are suggestive of the happenings in America.
