8-2 Short Paper: Assessing Limitations and Barriers

Limitation: In the control of malaria diseases, several interventions has been implemented to prevent the spread and prevalence of malaria disease. However, these interventions such as vaccination and immunization but they have not been 100% effective as there were still traces of malaria prevalence. In addition, the implementation of these intervention is very costly and thus, not implemented in all places. According to World Health Organisation (2018), over $5 billion dollars has been invested in the control of malaria vectors as well as immunization practices in the last 5 years. However, the invested amount seemed not to be enough because these interventions is not implemented in all regions. Also, the administration of vaccines and immunization requires high skilled professionals and these professionals has been in shortage of supply. However, huge amount of funds is required to train these professionals to effectively apply the proposed vaccination and immunization. The process of vaccination and immunization appeared to be painful in terms of injection and some individual maybe allergic to such pains.

Barriers: Although the developed malaria control interventions have been effective to some extent, there are possible barriers which may impede the success and effectiveness of the interventions. The first barrier is the cost involved in the implementation of these interventions. However, since lots of cost is required to develop these interventions, the government or the agencies involved in the control will be unable to effectively implement them in all the required areas and as a result the prevalence of malaria disease will increase in such areas. Also, some individuals especially those in rural areas may-be unable to access the facilities where the vaccine and immunization practices are performed and as a result, these group of individuals are left unvaccinated or unimmunized. In addition, those from low-income class may not be able to afford such services and thus may not be vaccinated. Some cultural or religious beliefs also influences the decision of some individuals and as a result, they may not turn up to receive such services. Lack or insufficient supply of qualified professionals for this responsibility may be a significant barrier to its success and effectiveness. According to WHO (2018), highly qualified health professionals are required to administer such service and these group of professionals have been identified to be in short supply. Therefore, the effectiveness or the success of the implemented intervention maybe significantly affected.

Final Project Limitations and Barriers: Considering the high level of maternal mortality in Haiti, wide range of interventions has been developed to bring the rate to a minimal level. Although these interventions have been effective but can be improved to offer a better service to the Haitians. To improve the provided intervention, the following recommendations has been made:

  • It is recommended that skilled care should be provided to mothers before, during and after childbirth. In addition, they should be encouraged to have various antenatal care visits where they should be attended to by skilled care workers. This service should be made free if possible or should be of low-cost because many Haitian women have no access to such services due to poverty.

  • It was identified that most of the Haitian women in the rural areas were attended by unskilled birth attendant and this was the major reason for high maternal mortality within the region. Therefore, it is recommended for educational programs be developed to educated them. Some efforts should also be channelled to community mobilization as well as the prediction and prevention of pregnancy complications.

  • The level of ignorance was also recognised as one of the major determinants of the high maternal mortality in Haiti, it is therefore recommended that access to basic and higher education for both boys and girls should be made available so as to promote a sustainable development within the country. In addition, the act of improving the level of education will affect the Haitian population positively in several ways such as reducing the level of poverty and at the same time increase gender equality as well as reduce maternal mortality.
